Today marks ninety-eight years since that scorching August: They say the cedars sheltered all the cardinal points of the courtyard from the sun, in Birán, the farm where Ángel and Lina made a home. Inside, the son was born who would become one of the most prominent political figures of the 20th century. Also in the leader of a people who venerates and remembers him today, when he is almost one century old, and will always remember him.

There are many reasons that make Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz unforgettable. First because it is him, simply Fidel, the child who questioned the whys of the injustices of the world; the young man who went to study in Havana and became an Orthodox, a lawyer and a rebel.

It is about the one who united the youth of his time to face a fierce dictatorship, yes, that of Batista, a real dictatorship, from which he tore hundreds of lives throughout the national geography. Make Fidel immortal as a memory of the Triumph on the first day of 1959. They say that "The dawn overcame the night" on that day when, in the name of the mambises, and even of today’s Cubans, the revolutionary movement won the war with him at the front.

Fidel is here. We do not forget who was a world leader, the authoritative and influential voice of the peoples of the Third World and an enemy respected and feared by US imperialism, which one who seeks to drown Cuba in an inhuman and genocidal sea of misery. 

Remembering Fidel is an instinct, such is the love that the people profess to him. His pride, magnetism, voice and word come to mind that made it easy to understand the difficult. Also the encouragement that he was able to convey, the strength that he gave to face the battles of the Revolution against a powerful enemy.

Fidel’s thought, 98 years away, is everywhere on the five continents. It was Fidel who predicted that a better world is possible, and warned of the dangers facing the human species in the face of wars, unrestrained weaponization, hunger, poverty, disease and the damage caused by climate change.

The future vision of the Cuban revolutionary leader and his clairvoyance are highly relevant. In these adverse times, he is a world leader: therefore it is not surprising when we ask what Fidel would do under the circumstances we are facing.  

Today he is again guide, teacher, father and light... For his birthday, once again, he counsels, enlightens, and points the way to resist and continue to win.
